Trafalgar Law's tattoos in One Piece are "DEATH" across the fingers of both hands, a cross-shaped mark on the back of each hand, heart designs on his chest, arms and shoulders, and the Heart Pirates' Jolly Roger on his back. Eiichiro Oda drew the full set in the SBS of Volume 71 and described them as heart-themed, but he has not explained what they mean. Below is each tattoo, where it appears in the manga, and which popular readings are fan theories rather than canon.
Key points
- Fingers: one letter per finger spelling "DEATH" on both hands, plus a cross-shaped mark on the back of each hand
- Chest: the Heart Pirates' Jolly Roger inside a heart-shaped design, with hearts on his arms and shoulders and the Jolly Roger on his back
- Oda drew all of them in the Volume 71 SBS and called them heart-themed, without saying why
- In Law's first chapters the finger letters were incomplete; from chapter 579 every finger on both hands has one

Law is one of the pirates known as the Worst Generation, and both captain and doctor of the Heart Pirates. He debuts on the Sabaody Archipelago in chapter 498, and at the end of the war at Marineford he carries Luffy and Jinbe off the battlefield in his submarine and treats their wounds (chapters 578–579, Volume 59).
After the timeskip he returns as one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea, on the island of Punk Hazard (chapter 659, Volume 67).
Law grew up in Flevance in the North Blue. The town's people suffered from amber lead syndrome, and neighboring countries destroyed it. Law survived and joined the Donquixote Pirates. Corazon (Donquixote Rosinante), Doflamingo's younger brother, took him away from the crew, obtained the Op-Op Fruit to cure him, and was shot dead by Doflamingo (chapters 762–767, Volumes 76–77).
Trafalgar Law's Tattoos and Their Meaning
Law's tattoos cover his fingers, the backs of his hands, his chest, his arms and shoulders, and his back. In the SBS of Volume 71 (the reader Q&A corner in the collected volumes, in the section printed with chapter 704), a reader asked Oda to draw all of Law's tattoos, and Oda drew them from his own notes.
According to One Piece Wiki's translation of that SBS, Oda added that the tattoos are heart-themed, but he gave no reason for it. (Source: One Piece Wiki, "SBS Volume 71")
The DEATH Tattoo on Law's Fingers

Each finger on both of Law's hands carries one letter, D, E, A, T and H, so together they spell "DEATH." (Source: One Piece Wiki, "Trafalgar D. Water Law")
The word echoes his epithet, "Surgeon of Death." We found no record, though, of Oda explaining why he gave Law this word.
Is Law's DEATH Tattoo a Mistake?
No, the spelling is correct. What changed is how it was drawn. According to One Piece Wiki, when Law debuted in chapter 498, only four fingers of his left hand were tattooed, and in chapter 500 his right hand has no letters at all. From chapter 579, near the end of the Marineford war, all five fingers on both hands carry a letter. The anime gave him all five from the start. (Source: One Piece Wiki, "Trafalgar D. Water Law/Misc.")
You may also see the fan theory that the word splits into "D EAT H." Fans who hold it point to chapter 764, "White Monster" (Volume 77), where Corazon tells young Law what children in his homeland are told about people who carry the name "D." In that scene, Corazon says children where he grew up are warned that if they misbehave, "D" will eat them. Nothing official links Law's finger tattoos to this line, so treat "D EAT H" as a fan reading.
The Cross on the Back of Law's Hands

The back of each hand has a mark of lines running out from a central circle in a cross shape. One Piece Wiki describes it as a black cross, and it is there from Law's first appearance in chapter 498 (Volume 51). (Source: One Piece Wiki, "Trafalgar D. Water Law")

Some fans compare the mark to the World Government's emblem, which joins circles in a cross shape, and read it as a jab at the government. We found no statement from Oda that supports this.
Law's Chest Tattoo: A Heart and the Heart Pirates Jolly Roger

Law's chest tattoo puts the Heart Pirates' Jolly Roger, a smiley-like face, in the center, framed by a heart-shaped design, as drawn in the Volume 71 SBS (chapter 704). (Source: One Piece Wiki, "Trafalgar D. Water Law")
Hearts show up elsewhere in Law's story too. The Op-Op Fruit that Corazon stole and force-fed to Law is drawn as a red, heart-shaped fruit (chapters 765–766, Volume 77). (Source: One Piece Wiki, "Ope Ope no Mi")
"Corazón" is Spanish for "heart." In the Donquixote Pirates, the top officers' seats are named after the four card suits, and "Corazon" is the code name of the officer in the Heart seat. In chapter 695 (Volume 70), Law is told that Doflamingo has been saving the Heart seat for him, and in chapter 759 (Volume 76) Doflamingo himself says Law would have become the third Corazon. (Source: One Piece Wiki, "Donquixote Pirates")
That is why some fans read Law's hearts as a tribute to Corazon. Oda has not confirmed it, and the Volume 71 SBS gives no reason either.
Law's Arm, Shoulder and Back Tattoos
Law has several tribal-style tattoos on his arms and a simple heart on each shoulder. His back carries the Heart Pirates' Jolly Roger. All of these appear in Oda's Volume 71 SBS drawing (chapter 704). (Sources: One Piece Wiki, "Trafalgar D. Water Law" and Japanese Wikipedia)
Law is rarely drawn shirtless, so these are seldom seen in the story. According to Japanese Wikipedia, Oda's Volume 71 sketch shows heart tattoos across his whole upper body.
Getting a Trafalgar Law Tattoo
Law's finger tattoo is lettering, one letter per finger. Fingers leave very little room, so settle the letter size, the font and which letter goes on which finger with the studio during your consultation. Hands and fingers are also hard to cover with clothing. If you are visiting Japan with visible tattoos, Tattoo Japan lists tattoo-friendly onsen and saunas.

FAQ about Trafalgar Law's Tattoos
What does Law's DEATH tattoo mean?
The letters on his fingers spell "DEATH," the same word as in his epithet, "Surgeon of Death." Oda has not explained the choice. Reading it as "D EAT H" is a fan theory.
How many tattoos does Law have?
Five areas are tattooed: his fingers (DEATH), the backs of his hands (a cross-shaped mark), his chest (a heart around the Heart Pirates' Jolly Roger), his arms and shoulders (hearts), and his back (the Heart Pirates' Jolly Roger). Oda drew the full set in the Volume 71 SBS.
Is Law's heart tattoo about Corazon?
There is no official answer. Corazón means "heart" in Spanish, and Corazon held the Heart seat in the Donquixote Pirates, so some fans connect the two. According to One Piece Wiki, the coat Law wears in the Dressrosa Arc has "Corazon" written on the back, but that is clothing, not a tattoo.
Which other One Piece characters have tattoos?
Portgas D. Ace has "ASCE" on his upper left arm and the Whitebeard Pirates' Jolly Roger on his back. See our Ace tattoo guide for what they mean.
Trafalgar Law's Tattoos at a Glance
Law's tattoos are "DEATH" on his fingers, a cross on the back of each hand, hearts on his chest, arms and shoulders, and the Heart Pirates' Jolly Roger on his back. Oda called them heart-themed in the Volume 71 SBS but did not say why.
The Corazon connection and the "D EAT H" reading are fan interpretations. If you want hearts or lettering of your own, compare designs first and then talk it through with a studio.
