Need to hide a tattoo for an onsen, pool or gym in Japan? Tattoo cover stickers are sold at Don Quijote, at drugstores such as Matsumoto Kiyoshi and Sundrug, and at the variety stores Loft and Hands, and you can order them from Amazon Japan. Daiso also sells a small cover sheet. Stock varies from store to store, so this guide covers where to look, what to buy and how to use them.

Key points

  • The maker of Hadakakushi cover sheets lists Don Quijote, Loft, Hands, Matsumoto Kiyoshi and Sundrug as stockists
  • Daiso's Fande Sheet is officially described as light coverage, so dark tattoos call for a sticker made for tattoos
  • Buying for the first time? Start with a trial set and match the shade to your skin
  • Covering up doesn't guarantee entry. Each onsen sets its own tattoo rules

If you'd rather not cover up at all, search for tattoo-friendly onsen and saunas or tattoo-friendly sento on Tattoo Japan.

Not every branch carries them. If you're short on time, ask your hotel front desk to call the store before you go.

Don Quijote (Donki)

Grand Bleu, the company behind Hadakakushi cover sheets, lists Don Quijote and MEGA Don Quijote among its stockists. It also asks shoppers to check stock with each store. (Source: Hadakakushi stockist list (Japanese))

Where the stickers sit inside the store varies too. The quickest way to find them is to show staff the words タトゥー隠しシール (tattoo cover sticker) or the product name.

Don Quijote has also sold decorative temporary tattoo stickers, which are a different product. Stock varies by store, so check before you go.

Drugstores: Matsumoto Kiyoshi and Sundrug

Matsumoto Kiyoshi and Sundrug are on the same stockist list. If your local Matsumoto Kiyoshi doesn't have Hadakakushi on the shelf, the maker says staff can order it in when you give them the 13-digit JAN (barcode) number. These are the tattoo versions sold in stores. (Source: Hadakakushi stockist list (Japanese))

The maker notes that in-store packs differ from its online packs in sheet count and price.

Loft and Hands

The variety store chains Loft and Hands (formerly Tokyu Hands) are also on Hadakakushi's stockist list. Stock varies by branch here too.

Daiso and Other 100-Yen Shops

In February 2023, Daiso introduced its Fande Sheet (ファンデシート), a skin-colored sheet you stick straight onto the skin, in small, medium and large sizes. Daiso describes it as lightly covering scars and tattoos and says it stands up to water, hot water and sweat. (Source: Daiso, Fande Sheet (Japanese))

Even the large sheet is only 49 × 66 mm. (Source: AppBank, September 11, 2023 (Japanese)) It's handy for a small, faint tattoo. For a dark or larger one, buy a sticker sold specifically for tattoos.

Daiso also says that stock differs between stores and may run out. The Daiso app has a store stock search.

Online: Amazon Japan and Maker Shops

Online shops have the widest range of shades and sizes. Foundation Tape and Hadakakushi both run their own web shops in Japanese. Foundation Tape says it has suspended overseas shipping, so plan to order once you're in Japan. (Source: Foundation Tape FAQ (Japanese))

Both makers recommend a trial set with one sheet of each shade for first-time buyers, so you can find the one that matches your skin. (Sources: Foundation Tape FAQ; Hadakakushi FAQ, both in Japanese)

The links below go to Amazon Japan (amazon.co.jp). If you order there, use an address in Japan where you can receive the parcel, and check first that your hotel accepts packages for guests.

Japanese Words to Look For on the Package

Most packaging is in Japanese only. These words tell you what you're holding:

タトゥー用tatū-yōFor tattoos
傷あと用kizuato-yōFor scars (lighter cover)
防水bōsuiWaterproof
大判ōbanLarge size

色合わせセットiro-awase settoShade-matching set

The difference between tattoo and scar versions matters. Foundation Tape says its scar version won't hide a tattoo. (Source: Foundation Tape FAQ (Japanese)) Hadakakushi's tattoo packaging also says it covers more than the scar and birthmark version.

How to Choose a Tattoo Cover Sticker

Waterproofing

For onsen and pools, pick a package marked 防水 (waterproof). Of the products in this guide, the OKTAPE Cover Patch is the exception: its Amazon listing says it resists water, but the Q&A on the same page says it is not waterproof and that water soaks in during baths and showers.

Coverage and Size

Choose a tattoo version rather than a scar version, and check the size guide on the package. CLASSE's size M, for example, is labeled for tattoos and dark scars within 5 × 8 cm. If your tattoo is bigger than the guide, a large sheet, or two sheets side by side, may work better. To cover a whole arm, an arm cover is simpler than stickers.

Comfort and Skin

The makers point to thinness as the reason their sheets blend in. Hadakakushi says its 0.02 mm sheet gives a natural finish, and CLASSE advertises 0.015 mm. (Source: Hadakakushi, regular size (Japanese)) Hadakakushi's maker advises avoiding joints and other spots where skin stretches a lot, and keeping clothes from rubbing the sheet. (Source: Hadakakushi FAQ (Japanese))

If you have sensitive skin, the same maker suggests not wearing a sheet for long stretches, and stopping and seeing a doctor if your skin reacts. Try a small piece somewhere discreet before the day you need it.

How Long They Last

Hadakakushi says one sheet can stay on for about a week, and Foundation Tape also advertises a week of wear. Hadakakushi notes that a sheet can't be used again once you peel it off. (Sources: Hadakakushi FAQ; Foundation Tape, both in Japanese)

Foundation Tape, Large Size (Login My Life)

Package of Foundation Tape, large size, 9.5 × 14 cm, 5 sheets in Pink Ochre

Foundation Tape from Login My Life is a Japan-made tape for covering tattoos. The large size measures 9.5 × 14 cm, with five sheets of one shade per pack. The linked shade is Pink Ochre.

The product page lists opaque coverage, waterproofing, a matte finish and about a week of wear, and says it's fine for onsen and pools. If you're not sure of your shade, try the five-shade standard set above first, then buy the large pack in your color.

OKTAPE Cover Patch

Package of OKTAPE Cover Patch, 100 × 140 mm, 10 patches

The OKTAPE Cover Patch uses kinesiology-tape material, which the product page says makes it flexible and durable. It comes in four sizes, from S (70 × 50 mm) to XL (140 × 180 mm), 10 patches per box. The link goes to the beige L size (100 × 140 mm).

The adhesive is latex-free. Its Q&A still advises people who are worried about skin reactions to test a patch first, since things other than latex can cause them. The listing says it resists water and is reassuring for bathing. The Q&A on the same page, however, says the patch repels water but is not waterproof, and that water soaks in during baths and showers. For onsen and pools, a product clearly marked waterproof is the safer pick.

Hadakakushi, Regular Size (Grand Bleu)

Package of Hadakakushi cover sheets, regular size, Yellow Natural, 10 sheets

Hadakakushi is a 0.02 mm skin-cover sheet for tattoos, dark scars and birthmarks. It's a transfer sheet that goes on without water, and it's waterproof against sweat and water.

It's made in Japan at a factory that also makes products for major cosmetics companies, and it has been patch-tested. The linked shade is Yellow Natural. The product page suggests Yellow Natural for fair skin, Natural for medium skin and Dark Ochre for tanned skin, and there's also a Pink Natural.

CLASSE Tattoo Concealer Stickers (Trial Set)

Package of CLASSE Seal Concealer trial set, size M, four shades

CLASSE's Seal Concealer is a 0.015 mm transfer sticker that you press on. It's made in Japan without formaldehyde.

The trial set has one sheet each in Light Beige, Natural Beige, Warm Ochre and Bronze. The package says it's for tattoos and dark scars within 5 × 8 cm, so it suits small tattoos. You can leave it on for several days, but you can't reapply it once peeled off.

Body Concealer Spray

Body Concealer spray can and its remover bottle

Body Concealer is sold by a partner shop (PR).

If a sticker won't fit, there's also a spray. Body Concealer is sprayed over the tattoo in a skin tone, then set with baby powder. Because you spray it on, you aren't limited by sheet size. It comes in four shades, No. 1 to No. 4, from fair to tanned.

The shop says it is waterproof and lasts around three days, and that it comes off with its own remover. The shop asks you not to use it around the face, and it can't be used on cuts or irritated skin. The shop is in Japanese.

How to Apply and Remove a Cover Sticker

Instructions differ a little by product, so check the leaflet too. These steps follow Hadakakushi's guide for transfer-type sheets. (Source: Hadakakushi FAQ (Japanese))

Applying

  1. Wipe off any oil or sweat and let the skin dry
  2. Hold the clear film in the middle and slowly peel off the white backing
  3. Place the skin-colored side on the tattoo and press from the center
  4. Slowly peel the clear film away from the edge, keeping air bubbles out

If you peel the backing too fast, the sheet can stay stuck to it.

Removing

  1. Press a piece of sticky tape onto the sheet and peel it off slowly
  2. If it won't budge, hold a cotton pad soaked in wound disinfectant on it for about 30 seconds
  3. If you have sensitive skin, use baby oil instead
  4. Rinse the area with lukewarm water afterward

Don't yank it off. Body Concealer spray is wiped away with its own remover.

Can You Use an Onsen If You Cover Your Tattoo?

It depends on the facility.

In March 2016, the Japan Tourism Agency sent hotel, ryokan and onsen industry associations a list of points to note and example responses for foreign visitors with tattoos who want to bathe. One example was asking the guest to cover the tattoo with a sticker or similar so other bathers can't see it. (Source: House of Representatives, written question, May 26, 2016 (Japanese))

The government later stated that the final decision rests with each onsen's manager. (Source: Cabinet answer, June 2, 2016 (Japanese))

Some places let you in with a covered tattoo, and others turn away tattooed guests even if the tattoo is covered. Check the facility's website or call before you go. Choosing a tattoo-friendly place means you won't have to worry about a sticker peeling off in the water.

FAQ

Does Don Quijote sell tattoo cover stickers?

Some stores do. Hadakakushi's maker lists Don Quijote as a stockist but asks shoppers to check stock with each store. Show staff the words タトゥー隠しシール if you can't find them.

Does Daiso sell tattoo covers?

Daiso introduced the Fande Sheet in 2023. Daiso describes it as light coverage, and even the large size is only 49 × 66 mm, so it works best on small, faint tattoos. Stock varies by store.

Can I buy tattoo cover stickers at a drugstore in Japan?

Yes, at some. Matsumoto Kiyoshi and Sundrug are on Hadakakushi's stockist list, and Matsumoto Kiyoshi can order it in if you give staff the JAN number.

How long does a tattoo cover sticker last?

Hadakakushi and Foundation Tape both say about a week, though rubbing and stretching shorten that. Some sheets, including Hadakakushi and CLASSE, can't be reapplied once removed.

Can I order tattoo covers before my trip?

Foundation Tape's own shop has suspended overseas shipping. The simplest option is to buy after you arrive, either in a store or from Amazon Japan with delivery to an address in Japan.

Are tattoo cover stickers the same as temporary tattoo stickers?

No. Cover stickers are skin-colored and hide a tattoo. Temporary tattoo stickers add a design instead. Don Quijote has sold those too, but stock varies by store, so check before you go.

The Bottom Line

In Japan, tattoo cover stickers are sold at Don Quijote, drugstores such as Matsumoto Kiyoshi and Sundrug, Loft and Hands, and Daiso has a small cover sheet. Stock varies, so if you need a particular shade or size, ordering from Amazon Japan is the most reliable option.

Look for 防水 (waterproof) and a tattoo version, pick a size larger than your tattoo, and start with a trial set to find your shade. Whether a covered tattoo gets you into an onsen is up to each facility, so check ahead or head somewhere tattoo-friendly.
