How to Choose a Tattoo Studio in Nagoya

A tattoo is for life, so it pays to choose carefully. Look at three things: what the artist specializes in, how the studio charges and handles deposits, and its hygiene and ID rules.

Pick an Artist Who Specializes in Your Style

Every studio has its strengths. Among the eight below, Horifune, Sculpted Skin Nagoya and OUTLAWS OF SILENCE TATTOO show traditional Japanese work, Fun Time Tattoo shows fine line and lettering, and Sacred Cartel Tattoo Nagoya has artists who focus on American traditional.

Browse each studio's website and Instagram for work in the style you want. Look for clean, even lines and solid color, and check whether they post healed photos, not just fresh ones.

Collect a few reference images before you go. You can browse Japanese traditional tattoo designs and fine line tattoo designs on Tattoo Japan.

Check Prices, Deposits and Cancellation Rules

Studios price work either by size or by the hour. Small pieces are usually priced by size, while large pieces and Japanese work are often charged hourly. The price table in the next section compares all eight.

Four of the studios explain their deposit on their websites:

StudioDepositWhat happens to it
OUTLAWS OF SILENCE¥20,000Taken off the bill
Sol Design Nagoya¥10,000Offset at the last session
North side tattooNone to ¥10,000Returned or taken off
Sculpted Skin NagoyaNone–

OUTLAWS OF SILENCE TATTOO and Sol Design Nagoya don't ask for a deposit if you're tattooed as a walk-in. At Sol Design Nagoya, changing your date less than a week before, or cancelling for your own reasons, means the deposit becomes a cancellation fee. If your travel plans could change, keep that in mind.

Check how you can pay, too. North side tattoo takes cash only, and Sol Design Nagoya and Sculpted Skin Nagoya handle credit cards through PayPal.

Check Hygiene, Age and ID Rules

See whether the studio explains its hygiene. OUTLAWS OF SILENCE TATTOO, Horifune and RYUJI TATTOO, for example, say they use single-use needles, ink and gloves and have an autoclave for sterilizing equipment.

OUTLAWS OF SILENCE TATTOO, Sol Design Nagoya, Horifune, North side tattoo and RYUJI TATTOO don't tattoo anyone under 18, and North side tattoo and RYUJI TATTOO also turn away high school students who are already 18. Several ask for ID, so bring your passport.

OUTLAWS OF SILENCE TATTOO

OUTLAWS OF SILENCE TATTOO is in Nakamura Ward. Its head artist, Shisai, began training in traditional Japanese hand tattooing (tebori) in 2007, and the studio's site puts his total at more than 8,000 tattoos. (Source: OUTLAWS OF SILENCE TATTOO artists page)

The studio's other artist, yuzu, joined Shisai's studio family as an apprentice in 2019 and started tattooing professionally in 2021. She focuses on Japanese work but takes on all styles, and the site says she can help clients in English, Spanish and Portuguese.

The studio covers all styles. Depending on the design, it can also do a walk-in session, where the consultation, design and tattoo all happen on the same day, but you still need to book your visit. White ink tattoos and UV (blacklight) tattoos are available too.

The studio has an autoclave and a UV sterilizer, and needles, ink cups, gloves and barriers are replaced with new ones for every client. There is a private booth. It doesn't tattoo anyone under 18, and you need to show ID when you visit. (Sources: shop info; official site, in Japanese)

Frequently Asked Questions About Tattoo Studios in Nagoya

Can tourists get a tattoo in Nagoya?

Yes. Tattooing is legal in Japan: in 2020, Japan's Supreme Court ruled that tattooing by an artist who is not a doctor does not count as medical practice under the Medical Practitioners' Act. (Source: Supreme Court of Japan, 2020, in Japanese) Sacred Cartel Tattoo Nagoya says it works with international clients every week, and OUTLAWS OF SILENCE TATTOO's yuzu can help in English.

How much does a small tattoo cost in Nagoya?

Among these eight studios, a coin-size piece costs ¥5,000–10,000 at Fun Time Tattoo and ¥10,000 at Sculpted Skin Nagoya. Sol Design Nagoya lists ¥10,000–20,000 for a piece the size of a ¥500 coin, plus tax. Prices depend on the design, so ask for a quote first.

Can I walk in without an appointment?

Sacred Cartel Tattoo Nagoya welcomes visitors without a booking, and Sol Design Nagoya takes walk-ins too. Sculpted Skin Nagoya takes same-day bookings when it has time, North side tattoo says it tries to tattoo same-day bookings quickly, and at OUTLAWS OF SILENCE TATTOO the consultation, design and tattoo can all happen in one booked visit, depending on the design. Contact the studio before you go.

Where can I get traditional Japanese tattoos (irezumi) in Nagoya?

Horifune works mainly in traditional Japanese style, and Sculpted Skin Nagoya works mainly in color Japanese work. At OUTLAWS OF SILENCE TATTOO, yuzu also focuses on Japanese work. Large Japanese pieces are usually charged by the hour and take several sessions, which is hard to fit into a short trip, so ask how many hours your piece will need.

Do I need ID to get tattooed?

Several studios ask for it. OUTLAWS OF SILENCE TATTOO, Horifune, North side tattoo and RYUJI TATTOO check ID, and Sol Design Nagoya asks for it when you book. Bring your passport.

Can I go to an onsen in Aichi with a tattoo?

Rules differ from bath to bath. On Tattoo Japan, 6 of the 13 onsen and saunas listed in Aichi Prefecture accept tattoos and 4 more accept them with conditions, and 35 of the 50 sento (public bathhouses) are marked as tattoo-friendly. With a new tattoo, wait until it has fully healed: North side tattoo, for example, asks clients to stay out of baths, onsen, pools and the sea until then.

Is there a temporary tattoo I can try first?

Jagua tattoos stain the skin with ink made from fruit instead of using needles. Tamayura total body art in Osu describes its jagua tattoos as painless, needle-free and gone in about two weeks, with sample designs from ¥1,650 for 3 cm. (Sources: Tamayura menu, in Japanese; Instagram) You can browse jagua tattoo designs on Tattoo Japan.
