Looking for a tattoo studio in Yokohama? Here are eight we checked in October 2026, from walk-in-friendly shops a few minutes from Yokohama Station to a private studio for hand-poked Japanese irezumi. For each one you'll find the styles, starting prices, deposit, age and walk-in rules, all taken from the studio's own website and Instagram.

Key points

  • We checked all eight studios on their official websites and Instagram in October 2026 (GRENADE INK's last Instagram post was in July)
  • Walk-ins: FANATIC TATTOO YOKOHAMA and Fine Line Tattoo Japan both welcome visitors without a booking, when they have time
  • English: Fine Line Tattoo Japan speaks English, Spanish and Portuguese, and some STROKER TATTOO artists speak English and Spanish
  • Kanagawa law bans tattooing anyone under 18, and three of these studios only tattoo clients aged 20 or over, so bring your passport
  • Lowest listed starting price: a one-point hand-poked piece from ¥5,000 at Shunho; for a small machine tattoo, ¥8,000 at Rokusaro

How to Choose a Tattoo Studio in Yokohama

A tattoo is for life, so it pays to choose carefully. Look at four things: what the artist specializes in, how the studio charges and handles deposits, its hygiene, and its age and ID rules.

Pick an Artist Who Specializes in Your Style

Every studio has its strengths. Among the eight below, Shunho tattoos traditional Japanese work entirely by hand, Fine Line Tattoo Japan focuses on fine line and American traditional, and Rokusaro mainly does small fashion pieces.

Browse each studio's website and Instagram for work in the style you want. Look for clean, even lines and solid color, and check whether they post healed photos, not just fresh ones.

Collect a few reference images before you go. You can browse Japanese traditional tattoo designs and fine line tattoo designs on Tattoo Japan.

Check Prices, Deposits and Payment

Studios price work either by size or by the hour. Small pieces are usually priced by size, while large pieces are charged hourly over several sessions. The price table in the next section compares all eight.

Five of the studios explain their deposit on their websites:

StudioDepositRule
STROKER TATTOOUsually noneMaybe ¥11,000 for new A4+ pieces
Fine Line Tattoo¥5,000Not refunded if you cancel
Rokusaro¥5,000If consult and tattoo days differ
Viagem.Ink¥10,000 (tax incl.)Change your date 48 hrs ahead
GRENADE INK¥10,000Lost if you cancel within 3 days

In every case the deposit comes off your final bill. If your travel plans could change, check the cancellation rule before you pay.

Check how you can pay, too. Fine Line Tattoo Japan takes cash only, GRAM TATTOO takes credit cards only through PayPal, and STROKER TATTOO accepts major credit cards. Some studios quote prices before tax, so ask whether a quote includes the 10% consumption tax.

Check Hygiene

See whether the studio explains its hygiene. All eight studios here say they use single-use needles, and STROKER TATTOO, Rokusaro, Shunho, Viagem.Ink and GRENADE INK say they sterilize reusable equipment in an autoclave.

Check Age and ID Rules

Kanagawa Prefecture's youth protection ordinance (青少年保護育成条例) bans anyone from tattooing a person under 18. Breaking it can bring up to a year in prison or a fine of up to ¥500,000. (Source: Kanagawa Prefecture youth protection ordinance, Article 30, in Japanese)

Many studios go further. STROKER TATTOO, FANATIC TATTOO YOKOHAMA and Viagem.Ink only tattoo clients aged 20 or over, Rokusaro 19 or over, and GRENADE INK 18 or over. Several ask for photo ID, so bring your passport to the consultation as well as the tattoo session.

STROKER TATTOO

STROKER TATTOO opened in 2003. It has two studios near Center-Minami Station in Yokohama's Tsuzuki Ward, plus studios in Machida (Tokyo) and Bangkok. Its website says ten artists, including women, take consultations, and it offers private booths and free touch-ups with no time limit. (Source: STROKER TATTOO official site, in Japanese)

The English page says the styles range from Japanese traditional (wabori) to old school, new school, blackwork and minimalism, and that some artists speak English and Spanish at an intermediate level. You must be 20 or over. (Source: STROKER TATTOO English information)

Prices go by size and are quoted before tax: a piece the size of a ¥500 coin starts at ¥10,000, and large work such as a full arm or back is ¥10,000–15,000 an hour. Since January 2025, artists KAN, Chihiro and Erika, each with 15+ years' experience, charge ¥15,000 an hour. Color doesn't cost extra, and all major credit cards are accepted.

The studio doesn't usually take a deposit. Walk-ins are paused for now and visits are by appointment, but if there's an open slot, you can be tattooed the same day. Everyone is asked to show ID. (Source: STROKER TATTOO prices and booking, in Japanese)

The studio's FAQ describes it as a walk-in studio rather than appointment-only. (Sources: FAQ, in Japanese; Instagram)

You must be 20 or over (no high school students) and show photo ID proving it. The studio's notes page also says people aged 20 or under can't be tattooed, so if you are exactly 20, check with the studio first. Ink, needles, gloves, tubes and tips are all single-use, and there are partitioned booths. The site also has an English guide for visitors with directions from Haneda and Narita airports. Yokohama Tattoo Studio FAQ

Can tourists get a tattoo in Yokohama?

Yes. Tattooing is legal in Japan: in 2020, Japan's Supreme Court ruled that tattooing by an artist who is not a doctor does not count as medical practice under the Medical Practitioners' Act. (Source: Supreme Court of Japan, 2020, in Japanese) FANATIC TATTOO YOKOHAMA's English guide notes that Yokohama is less than half an hour from Tokyo by train and explains how to get there from Haneda and Narita airports.

How much does a small tattoo cost in Yokohama?

Among these eight studios, most small pieces start at ¥10,000, and three of them quote that before tax. Rokusaro starts at ¥8,000 for a coin-size piece, and Shunho lists hand-poked one-point pieces from ¥5,000. Prices depend on the design, so ask for a quote first.

Can I walk in without an appointment?

FANATIC TATTOO YOKOHAMA works as a walk-in studio and can tattoo you the same day if it has time (same-day bookings by phone), and Fine Line Tattoo Japan welcomes walk-ins too. Rokusaro can do designs smaller than a cigarette pack on the day you book, and Viagem.Ink can tattoo small, simple designs on the day of the consultation. STROKER TATTOO is appointment-only for now but takes same-day sessions when a slot is open.

Which studios speak English?

Fine Line Tattoo Japan speaks Japanese, English, Spanish and Portuguese. At STROKER TATTOO, some artists speak English and Spanish at an intermediate level, and the studio has an English information page. FANATIC TATTOO YOKOHAMA has an English guide for visitors.

Where can I get traditional Japanese tattoos (irezumi) in Yokohama?

Shunho works only in traditional Japanese style and does it by hand (tebori). FANATIC TATTOO YOKOHAMA and GRENADE INK also take on Japanese work. Large Japanese pieces are usually charged by the hour over several sessions, which is hard to fit into a short trip, so ask how many hours your piece will need.

How old do I have to be, and do I need ID?

Kanagawa law bans tattooing anyone under 18, and several studios set a higher limit: 20 at STROKER TATTOO, FANATIC TATTOO YOKOHAMA and Viagem.Ink, and 19 at Rokusaro. STROKER TATTOO, FANATIC TATTOO YOKOHAMA, Fine Line Tattoo Japan, Rokusaro, Viagem.Ink and GRENADE INK ask for ID, so bring your passport.

Can I go to an onsen in Kanagawa with a tattoo?

Rules differ from bath to bath. On Tattoo Japan as of October 2026, 19 of the 33 onsen and saunas listed in Kanagawa Prefecture accept tattoos and 8 more accept them with conditions, and 60 of the 105 sento (public bathhouses) are marked as tattoo-friendly. With a new tattoo, wait until it has fully healed: Fine Line Tattoo Japan, for example, tells clients not to soak in baths, pools, hot tubs or the ocean until then.

Is there a temporary tattoo I can try first?

Jagua tattoos stain the skin with ink made from fruit extract instead of using needles. twins, near Kannai Station, specializes in jagua tattoos that fade naturally in about two weeks, from ¥3,300 for a piece the size of a ¥500 coin. Payment is cash only. (Sources: twins, in Japanese; Instagram) You can browse jagua tattoo designs on Tattoo Japan.
