For each one you'll find its walk-in policy, starting prices, deposit and ID rules, all taken from the studio's own website and Instagram.

- Tattoo Ajito, Synchronicity, Crystal and Catclaw Tattoo-Z say they can tattoo walk-ins on the day when they have time, though booked clients come first
- Cheapest coin-sized piece: Synchronicity, from ¥8,000 including tax and needle fee; PISARA does tiny dot-like pieces from ¥3,000
- Female artists: Crystal Tattoo Shop Okinawa (female-owned), chunkymaymay inks and Tattoo Ajito
- Okinawa Prefecture bans tattooing anyone under 18, so bring your passport as ID
Want to compare more shops? Tattoo Japan lists 20 studios in Okinawa Prefecture as of October 2026, including 6 in Okinawa City, 4 in Naha and 4 in Chatan. Search tattoo studios in Okinawa.
How to Choose a Tattoo Studio in Okinawa
Of the 20 Okinawa studios on Tattoo Japan, 14 are in Okinawa City, Naha or Chatan, all on the main island. Before you book, compare four things: walk-in policy, prices and deposits, the styles each artist does, and the age and ID rules.
Walk-Ins: Check Before You Go
Several studios will tattoo you the same day if they have a free slot. Here is how the six studios below handle walk-ins:
| Studio | Same-day tattoos | Contact first by |
|---|---|---|
| Tattoo Ajito | Welcome (bookings first) | Phone on the day |
| Synchronicity | Possible (bookings first) | Phone on the day |
| Crystal | Possible, if there's time | Email or Instagram DM |
| Catclaw Tattoo-Z | If there's space | Phone or message |
| chunkymaymay inks | Sometimes; ask | Email or LINE |
| PISARA | Small pieces when possible | Phone before visiting |
Booked clients always come first. Tattoo Ajito notes that without a booking you may have to wait. If your travel dates are fixed, message the studio before your trip.
Compare Prices, Deposits and Payment
Here are the guide prices and deposits each studio lists on its website:
| Studio | Minimum | Hourly | Deposit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tattoo Ajito | ¥10,000+ (plus tax) | ¥10,000 (plus tax) | ¥10,000–30,000 |
| Synchronicity | ¥8,000+ (tax incl.) | ¥10,000–12,000 | Required (amount not listed) |
| Crystal | ¥10,000+ (plus tax) | ¥12,000–15,000+ | From ¥10,000 |
| Catclaw Tattoo-Z | Not listed | Not listed | Not listed |
| chunkymaymay inks | ¥10,000 | ¥10,000 | None (2019 page) |
| PISARA | ¥10,000+ (tiny ¥3,000+) | ¥50,000 for 4 hours | Not listed |
Synchronicity, Crystal and Tattoo Ajito also show prices in US dollars on their sites, and Synchronicity says it calculates prices on a dollar basis. Synchronicity takes cash, au PAY and PayPal; chunkymaymay inks takes cash only.
Read the deposit rules before you pay, especially if your plans could change. Crystal, for example, keeps the deposit if you cancel, lets you change your date up to a week before, and cancels your booking if you're more than 30 minutes late without notice. For typical prices across Japan, see our guide to tattoo prices in Japan.
Find a Studio That Does Your Style
Each studio has its strengths. For Japanese work, try Tattoo Ajito, whose artist uses both machine and tebori (hand tattooing), or Catclaw Tattoo-Z, whose artist specializes in Japanese and American traditional. For tribal, PISARA TATTOO OKINAWA. Synchronicity and Crystal take on all styles, from small one-point pieces to Japanese work.
Save a few reference images before you go. You can browse Japanese traditional designs, tribal and blackwork designs and one-point designs on Tattoo Japan.
Plan Around Your Trip
Large pieces take several sessions, so on a short trip it's easier to pick something that can be finished in one sitting. Tattoo Ajito's time guide puts a one-point piece at 10–30 minutes and a cigarette-pack-sized piece at 1–2 hours. (Source: Tattoo Ajito price page)
If you're driving, check the parking. Crystal has parking behind its building and chunkymaymay inks has spaces in front of the studio. Catclaw Tattoo-Z has no parking and points you to nearby coin parking lots.
Age, ID and Hygiene
Okinawa Prefecture's youth protection ordinance says that no one may tattoo a minor, or arrange for one to be tattooed, without a legitimate reason (Article 18-3). Under the ordinance, a minor is anyone under 18 (Article 5). (Source: Okinawa Prefecture youth protection ordinance, in Japanese)
Some studios go further: Tattoo Ajito, Crystal and chunkymaymay inks won't tattoo high school students even if they are 18. Tattoo Ajito, Synchronicity and Crystal check ID when you book, so bring your passport. Synchronicity's Japanese FAQ also lists a personal seal (inkan), so ask what to bring if you don't have one.
For hygiene, Tattoo Ajito, Synchronicity and Crystal all say they use single-use needles and sterilize their equipment in an autoclave.

In June 2026 the studio announced a move from Nago to Yorimiya in Naha. Until the artist finds a home there, the Naha shop opens about two days a week, with a full opening to be announced. Getting Tattooed on an Okinawa Trip: Sun, Sea and Onsen
Okinawa's sun and sea matter both before and after your session. Synchronicity says it may postpone if your skin is in poor condition from sunburn, and Tattoo Ajito says it can't tattoo skin that is sensitive or peeling, so avoid sunburn before your appointment. (Sources: Synchronicity official site; Tattoo Ajito price page)
Afterward, Synchronicity asks clients to stay out of the sea and avoid sunburn for at least two weeks, and not to soak in a bath on the day of the tattoo. Even once it has healed, the studio doesn't recommend sunburn if you want the tattoo to keep looking good. (Source: Synchronicity FAQ, in Japanese)
If your trip includes beach days, book your tattoo near the end of your stay. Follow your artist's aftercare instructions while it heals. Once it has healed, a sunscreen made for tattoos can help with sun protection.

Planning to hit the beach, pool or an onsen with healed tattoos? Rules differ from place to place, so check first. As of October 2026, 44 of the 49 Okinawa beaches on Tattoo Japan are marked "Tattoo OK" or "Limited", as are 9 of the 11 onsen and saunas and 39 of the 50 hotels and ryokan.

Hajichi: Okinawa's Traditional Tattoos
Okinawa has its own tattoo history. According to the Okinawa Prefectural Library, until the modern era women in Amami and Okinawa tattooed the backs of their hands as a rite of passage, a custom called hajichi on Okinawa Island. After a tattoo ban took effect in 1899, women with hajichi and the people who applied them could be punished, and the custom gradually disappeared. (Source: Okinawa Prefectural Library booklist No. 5, "Hajichi", in Japanese)
May of chunkymaymay inks writes on her site that she helped recreate hajichi on silicone arms for a 2019 hajichi exhibition at the Okinawa Prefectural Museum & Art Museum. (Source: chunkymaymay inks news, July 2019, in Japanese)
Frequently Asked Questions About Tattoo Studios in Okinawa
Can tourists get a tattoo in Okinawa?
Yes. Tattooing is legal in Japan: in 2020, Japan's Supreme Court ruled that tattooing by an artist who is not a doctor does not count as medical practice under the Medical Practitioners' Act. (Source: Supreme Court of Japan, 2020, in Japanese) Crystal Tattoo Shop Okinawa has English-speaking artists, Tattoo Ajito's Mikazzki speaks English, and May at chunkymaymay inks says she speaks English OK.
Can I walk in without an appointment?
Tattoo Ajito, Synchronicity, Crystal Tattoo Shop Okinawa and Catclaw Tattoo-Z say they can tattoo walk-ins on the day when they have time. Booked clients come first everywhere, so call, email or send an Instagram message before you go.
How much does a small tattoo cost in Okinawa?
Among these six studios, a coin-sized piece is cheapest at Synchronicity, with a ¥8,000 minimum charge including tax and needle fee. PISARA does tiny pieces, such as a dot, from ¥3,000, and most of the others start at ¥10,000. Some prices include tax and some don't, so ask for a quote first.
How old do I have to be, and what ID do I need?
You must be at least 18: Okinawa's youth protection ordinance bans tattooing anyone under 18. Some studios also turn away 18-year-old high school students. Tattoo Ajito, Synchronicity and Crystal check ID when you book, so bring your passport.
