What to Know Before Getting Tattooed in Tokyo

Getting a tattoo in Tokyo as a visitor is straightforward if you plan ahead. Four things catch people out: booking, ID, deposits and how prices are quoted.

Tattooing Is Legal, and Many Studios Speak English

Tattooing is legal in Japan. In 2020, Japan's Supreme Court ruled that tattooing by an artist who is not a doctor does not count as medical practice under the Medical Practitioners' Act. (Source: Supreme Court of Japan, 2020, in Japanese)

Of the 108 Tokyo studios on Tattoo Japan, 44 are marked "English OK" in their listings. Among the 13 below, INSCRIBE TATTOO, Sunsqlit Tattoo, RAIN FALL TATTOO, Crystal Tattoo Shop Shinjuku and INKLY TATTOO have English pages or English-speaking staff.

Bring Photo ID and Know the Age Rules

Studios check your age with photo ID, so bring your passport. The 11 studios here that state an age rule all refuse anyone under 18, and most also turn away high school students who are 18. Tattoo Studio KAGEROU, ART UP TATTOO, TATTOO STUDIO YAMADA and RAIN FALL TATTOO only tattoo people aged 20 and over. Expect a Deposit, and Check Tax and Payment

Most studios take a deposit (often called uchikin) when you book or before they start your design. Here it ranges from about ¥5,000 to over ¥30,000 for large pieces. It is usually taken off your final bill, but some studios keep it if you cancel or change your date, which matters if your travel plans shift.

Some studios quote prices before tax (INSCRIBE TATTOO, Sunsqlit Tattoo and Crystal Tattoo Shop Shinjuku add 10% consumption tax). ART UP TATTOO, TATTOO STUDIO YAMADA and MagicRat do not take credit cards.

Look at the Artist's Portfolio

Browse the studio's website and Instagram for work in the style you want. Look for clean, even lines and solid color, and check whether they post healed photos, not just fresh ones. At multi-artist studios, each artist has a specialty: TATTOO STUDIO YAMADA, for example, lists American traditional, black and grey, and ukiyo-e inspired artists. ART UP TATTOO

ART UP TATTOO is a private, appointment-only studio run by one female artist, Yuu. Its website says women can visit on their own with peace of mind, and men are welcome too. The studio is in Kawaguchi-machi, Hachioji, in western Tokyo, about 30 minutes by bus from JR Hachioji Station. The exact location is sent after you book. It does not take walk-ins, and because the artist works alone, the website asks you to use the contact form rather than call.

inklinic (tattoos at partner studio INKLY TATTOO)

inklinic is a medical clinic in Ueno. As of October 2026, the tattooing itself is done by its partner studio INKLY TATTOO on the second floor of the same building, while inklinic handles pre-tattoo anesthesia consultations and treatment based on a doctor's examination. If you are worried about pain, you can choose numbing cream at INKLY TATTOO at no extra charge. A doctor or nurse from inklinic applies it, and a doctor examines you on your first visit. TATTOO STUDIO YAMADA is a Harajuku studio where every design is drawn as an original in the style of the artist you book. Its artists include Len and Masa (American traditional), Aran and Eiki (black and grey) and Kyoka (ukiyo-e inspired). The Japanese homepage shows each studio's availability for today and tomorrow, all booths are private rooms, and some staff speak English. Fuga Tattoo Shop Shinjuku (now Crystal Tattoo Shop Shinjuku)

Fuga Tattoo Shop Shinjuku has been renamed Crystal Tattoo Shop Shinjuku. It is the original Tokyo studio of Crystal Tattoo, which owner Ryu, a female artist, started as a one-booth studio; the group now also has studios in Harajuku, Shibuya and Okinawa. (Source: Crystal Tattoo Shop Shinjuku)

It does every style, from small pieces to Japanese work and hand-poke tattoos. The pricing page says the studio "accepts walk-ins and has English-speaking artists, so you can call us in English as well." Needles, ink, ink caps and gloves are single-use, and grips and tubes are sterilized in an autoclave.

Rooms are fully private and the studio has female staff. Its FAQ calls it a "walk-in shop": you can visit without booking, and depending on the design you can get tattooed the same day if there's a free slot. Its Instagram profile says "WALK-INS WELCOME TODAY. ENGLISH AVAILABLE." and two of its artists list English among their languages.

MagicRat is a 5-minute walk from the West Exit of Ikebukuro Station. It mainly does Western-style tattoos but covers all styles: custom designs, flash from the studio, or a design you bring. INSCRIBE TATTOO and Sunsqlit Tattoo also use private rooms, and INKLY TATTOO lets you ask for a female artist in advance. On Tattoo Japan, 58 of the 108 Tokyo studios are marked "Female artist".

Small tattoos on a budget

Small pieces start at ¥5,000 at T.C tattoo tokyo, MagicRat and A-tattoo, and at ¥5,000 plus tax at INSCRIBE TATTOO and Sunsqlit Tattoo. What counts as "one point" or "coin size" differs between studios, so send a photo and get a quote first.
